“ The settlement with Dawn Simorangkir (aka the “Boudior Queen”), which sources say is being finalized today and will be announced next week, will cost Love about $430,000.”
That’s the Hollywood Reporter breaking the news that Courtney Love will be forced to pay nearly half a million dollars to a woman whom was described by the rock star on Twitter as a “drug-pushing prostitute with a history of assault and battery.” Now, I make fun of people on Twitter from time to time (a lot, actually). And while Love is clearly an unsympathetic figure who allegedly lied about Simorangkir, I do worry that this kind of settlement will make it harder for us to insult people online. It’s a freedom I cherish desperately. Is calling someone dumb defamatory? Should you be sued for it? Where’s the line between mockery and outright libel? I think this won’t be the last time you see a big Twitter settlement like this. And I don’t know if that’s a good thing.
